Climate control with heat exchangers
More and more animal houses currently being ventilated via heat exchangers. The great advantage of heat exchangers is that they use the heat from the extracted air to heat up the incoming air. The warm indoor air and the cold outdoor air flow past each other in opposite directions, so that there is an equal temperature difference along the entire heat exchanger and the heat transfer is optimal. With the Fortica® system, the poultry farmer can control the heat exchangers perfectly, creating the optimum climate while keeping heating costs low.
Advantages
Since heat exchangers were introduced into animal houses, several more application possibilities and advantages have been discovered. We would like to elaborate some of these:

Reduction in manure disposal costs
The first heat exchangers were used to dry manure in laying poultry houses. The fresh air that is heated up in the heat exchanger is blown across the manure belts to dry the manure. This results in drier and thus lighter manure and reduced ammonia emissions.
Reduction in energy consumption
Through the use of heat exchangers, less heat is lost in ventilation so that less heating is needed. This results in lower heating costs.
Improvement of the barn climate
Through the use of heat exchangers, it is possible to ventilate more for the same or even lower heating costs. The extra ventilation ensures better removal of excess moisture and CO₂. This results in better air quality, benefiting animal health.
Reduction in ammonia emission
In houses with ground accommodation, the use of heat exchangers in combination with mixed ventilation has a drying effect on the manure. The drier manure emits less ammonia. In the Netherlands, this has been a recognised system to reduce ammonia emission since 2012.
Reduction in particulates emission
In the heat exchanger, the heat from the outgoing air is transferred to the incoming air; thanks to this, the outgoing air cools down and some of the moisture in this air is condensed out. Through a combination of condensation and a large contact area, around 80% of the particulates in the extracted air remain behind in the heat exchanger.
Thanks to the many advantages and application possibilities of heat exchangers, we see that conventional ventilation is being replaced by heat exchangers ever more frequently. Where, in the past, conventional ventilation was partly replaced by a heat exchanger at low outdoor temperatures, we now sometimes see that only heat exchangers are needed to control the entire ventilation in the poultry house.

With the Fortica® system, it is also possible to regulate these houses perfectly with heat exchangers alone. Up to four heat exchangers may be activated at the same time.
